The Greenlight Groove: ‘Sandmason’, ‘Read Only Memories’ and More

December 1st, 2013 Wraithkal Feature

It’s a fact that many Steam users don’t check or even notice most Greenlight additions. There are simply too many, making it rather time-consuming. Hoping to alleviate this problem somewhat, I bring you The Greenlight Groove, featuring my recommendations from the past week!

Another slow week on Greenlight, yet I did manage to dig up some interesting stuff. What? No, the pool game is not there by mistake. Look closer, and surely you’ll see why I gave it my vote. But enough of that – time for you to check out the entire lineup. Don’t skip through it either, because I’ll know. I’m (still) watching you!

Oh right, one thing before the list: these are by no means the only new arrivals, instead simply those I decided to give my ‘yes’ vote (hence, recommendations). With that in mind, would you kindly help make sure none of them end up as a potential Stuck In Greenlight Limbo candidate? Either by voting or by providing their creators with feedback.

Astrobase Command

Astrobase Command
Astrobase Command is a sandbox base-building RPG in a low-tech science fiction universe. Explore the stars with the computing power of the Atari Age! Inspired by the science fiction movies and television shows of the ’70s and ’80s, its focus is on the bonds the player will develop with the characters rather than the advanced technology they use. Build 3D starbases, explore exotic new worlds, and wage battles in space or on planetary surfaces.

Tiny Trek

Tiny Trek
Have you ever wanted to play your favorite weekly Science Fiction show and engage in the same exciting adventures they do? Travel to strange alien worlds, meet interesting and unique life forms and then if you want… shoot them? In Tiny Trek you will be able to do exactly that. You see, probably like me, you have yet to find a space based game that gives you gameplay that emulates the great Science Fiction TV shows we all love. And thus that is what I set out to do with my latest game project, Tiny Trek.

Grow

Grow
Every player starts the game as a newly hatched ‘Nom’. By scavenging food around the level you can grow into unique and powerful creatures. What you eat changes what you become and what you become vastly impacts the way you play.

Cuebox

Cuebox : The Real 3D Pool
It is the first 3D pool game with zero gravity. Play Cuebox in beautiful HD graphics and discover the dimension of billiards you have never encountered before! Compete against a friend or in single player mode playing classic 8-ball and 9-ball games that are extended to three dimensions!

Sandmason

Sandmason
You are a mine worker, stuck deep in an underground cave system. All you have is your hi-tech mining tools. In order to get out of the caves you have to shape the dynamic environment by digging and building the ground. You can also create force fields for different purposes.

Read Only Memories

Read Only Memories
You’re a young journalist trying to hack it on your own in Neo-San Francisco. It’s a tough city, but you’re a tough nut. One day you receive a package containing a beta version of the latest ROM, an intelligent device that has replaced all personal mobile technology. With the ROM lay a mysterious note from a close friend, saying that he had to leave the country immediately. Weird.

Exploring an immense players generated world can be overwhelming. Chat and scribble with other players, and try to figure it out together. Participate in discussions about areas, and see what players say about your own creations.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
