Speculating Screenshots (9th May 2015)

May 12th, 2015 Wraithkal Feature

For most, weekends mean two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag; some of which I will be critiquing every Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

I… uh, wait, what? Octupus fairy? Is that a thing now? Oh right – anything’s possible in the realm of video games!

While I haven’t the foggiest where this one’s going, what’s shown in this screenshot does still intrigue me. Well done, I’d say!

Just hanging out on my brand new boat!

That’s one helluva small boat, eh? I mean, sure, “still not finished”, but even so. Small boat is small, and thus more likely to sink. I think. Logic ain’t my strongest suit.

Yea really! HIT THOSE DUMMIES! Wait… where are the dummies? Oh, hidden underneath that huge text box. Right. Well, hit them!

Danger Zone is nearly done, still needs a lot of testing though :/ #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/u5H99Vv4xx

Danger Zone (@ConnorWestrope)
So… a game with flashy neon lights, masks and a rodent wearing sunglasses while holding a shotgun – what could possibly go wrong? Everything!

Pixel Purgatory PLUS (@Bakufreak)
And what a lovely GUI it is! That said, ‘Smoke Toad’? Man, I thought the Final Fantasy games had weird enemy names…

#ScreenshotSaturday Alpha coming soon? #GameAudio #indiedev #LithiumCity #LowPoly #2D pic.twitter.com/faAs3hYA79

Lithium City(?) (@JamesAbels)
Sure looks alpha ready to me, even though I’m not really sure what it’s all about. Do you? Huh? Do you? Then tell me!

Better than catching a cold! No? Tough crowd. Liking them pixels though…

Wow. So many “can’t wait to try it!” this week. Who isn’t excited about the prospect of flying at crazy speeds through something that stylish, after all?

Okay…Who put this giant menacing spider robot in here?! #screenshotsaturday #indiegames #indiedev pic.twitter.com/zVq3V3txXq

The Bug Butcher (@_AwfullyNice_)
Wasn’t me! Or was it? Nah, of course it wasn’t. Looks like it’s gonna take quite a beating before biting the dust though…

Shadows of Adam (@SomethingClassc)
Ruuuuuuined! Looks great, but still… ruuuuuuined! Ruins? Ruined? Ruined ruins? Also, I’d get out of there ASAP if I was that guy – this is no time to take in the scenery!

Today's #ScreenshotSaturday is a sneak peek of a side project… soon, you'll get to RESCUE DA WORLD #ArminRODW pic.twitter.com/dE6j1SdsQK

— Triiiniteam (@triiiniteam) May 9, 2015

Untitled (@triiiniteam)
Da entire world or just part of it? I mean… side project is side project, and I do so prefer rescuing the entire thing! What’s the deal with those hooded figures to the right though?

The Detail Episode 2 – From the Ashes coming soon @steam_games #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #gamedev #comics pic.twitter.com/Sx75BI1P4e

Now that’s how you show off a gloomy part of town: with a nice stylish celshaded(?) look. Just saying.

Here's one of #DiscStorm's new formidable bosses for #screenshotsaturday. #indiedev pic.twitter.com/1bxUREEZJB

DiscStorm (@XMPTGames)
Formidable? Ha! If not for those fiery… things… I’m sure he’d be no trouble at all. Yup. No trouble at all. Sure looks mean though.

Working on a twine about looking at porn for the first time (with ascii porn in it). #screenshotsaturday #altgames pic.twitter.com/dDkHDwpFKc

Untitled (@just404it)
Well, they do say that the Internet is for porn, so why not? I just hope this particular twine is well-written though, as it’d be significantly less interesting, were it simply another softcore novel (albeit with an interactive twist). But we’ll see. In any case, that’s it for this week’s screenshots!

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
