Speculating Screenshots (3rd October 2015)

Speculating Screenshots (3rd October 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

Since it's #screenshotsaturday, here's one of the newer levels in 10MB, The Dead Cities. #10minutebarbarian pic.twitter.com/1k8COQNTCZ

Ha! Doom and gloom does not affect me, for I am… the… 10 Minute Barbarian?! (Wait, what?)

THIS… IS… SPARTA! 4X style! No, really – Sparta is on the map. Look, right there!

Because every Speculating Screenshots needs at least one space battle! (Let’s ignore the fact that some don’t.)

Finished a "spellbook" menu where you can see all the spells you have found. #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev pic.twitter.com/3xkZGTuPlk

But how do you CAST them? Knowing which ya have is great, but… knowing is only half the battle! Or something along those lines.

Skylights! Exciting! #screenshotsaturday #indiegame #gamedev pic.twitter.com/5bg9nHGeX7

Would be more exciting if smashed. Just saying. Blow them up and scare the crap out of any potential guards patrolling down below. Do it!

You think you can get out? #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev pic.twitter.com/fiXIR7FUmS

Get out? Sure, just slide them hieroglyphical tiles around a bit. Or alternatively… leap onto the spikes. One way or another, I’ll be out.

Lovely fire, burning bright all through the night. One thing troubles me though: who might that all-blue person in the doorway be?

While of undeniably stylish design, who, I say who… would want to live in a telescope house, really? Who indeed.

Does it make coffee though? I mean, strong jets. Great and all. But coffee? COFFEE!

Oh no. Not that song. Anything but that song. Also, red fella looks more like a samurai, ya know?

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
