Speculating Screenshots (21st February 2015)

February 24th, 2015 Wraithkal Feature

For most, weekends mean two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag; some of which I will be critiquing every Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Iteration time! Here is a revised version of the Chapel, optimized for dynamic lighting! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev pic.twitter.com/GTt64grXz1

But did they optimize the chapel itself for dynamic lighting, or just the in-game version? Now that… that is the question.

It's crowded on the beach today in #Outwitters! #ScreenshotSaturday @indiegamemag #indiedev pic.twitter.com/fdZxAzFLec

Ah, to be chillin’ at the beach under the sun right now would be so good. Well, except for the fact that based on the above screenshot, a war is either about to break out, or one has already begun. I think it’s the latter. FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Yeah well… we all have to start somewhere, right Yosuke? Now, I have yet to play Persona 4, but that (probably) won’t stop me from playing this doujin creation. At some point. When it’s done and out.

First a trip to the beach, then a fan creation based on a popular franchise, and now we’re going gardening? Man, this past Saturday’s screenshots sure went places. That said, is it just me, or doesn’t that screenshot look a tad creepy?

Then… do the chasing instead, eh? Surely you can take him, being level 9 and all, with that big pink sword (wait, what?)! Kick some ass, Super Chibi Knight.

Game for a book I'm working on. Its gruesome at best. #screenshotsaturday #phaserjs pic.twitter.com/Pjccu749u4

Speaking of kicking ass, who the heck invited all those skeletons, and only two… uh, whatever those figures dressed in red are? Even the odds! EVEN THE ODDS! That is all.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
