Speculating Screenshots (11th April 2015)

Speculating Screenshots (11th April 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills. So without further ado…

A lost code? To what, exactly? Also, what’s the deal with those three odd looking characters? Yup, kicking off Screenshot Speculations this week with… questions!

Ah, treehouses. The escape-from-everything place for most kids, and even some adults (but… let’s not go there). In this case it looks more like a getaway for animals of the forest, though?

#screenshotsaturday Working on an IF game for #punkjam. I've now programed it so the game repremands you if you swear pic.twitter.com/2FqltkGW9g

Ha! If only more games had that feature. Although come to think of it, I guess that would require them be either text adventures, or have the player utilize some sort of microphone while playing. Oh well. Anyway, yay, IF!

This week we announced our NES-inspired game Alwa’s Awakening. #indiedev #screenshotsaturday #gamedev pic.twitter.com/xL3pRMN4wh

Holy crap, that’s a lot of spiked balls. Game looks good though, even if I’m a tad worried it’ll be another one of them brutally difficult platformers that I’m generally rubbish at. Could still be great though!

It's #screenshotsaturday!!!

#ScreenshotSaturday with a twist of stealth, it seems? At least that’s what comes to mind, whenever I see a top-down perspective and light cones angled like that. Love the style though, stealth or not.

You can destroy a chair in a library ! This is pure madness. Really.#screenshotsaturday #gamedev pic.twitter.com/1HAuwTWJ2u

But can you get away with it? See, that is the question. Librarians tend to be a mean bunch after all, or at least, in my experience. That aside, nice to see another isometric turn-based RPG!

#screenshotsaturday Face your enemy pic.twitter.com/OhEasWEO2I

“Face”, eh? I see what you did there. Jokes aside, that better be a boss fight. It better be. It has to be, because… face-off. Alright, I’m done.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
