Speculating Screenshots (4th March 2017)

March 7th, 2017 Wraithkal Feature

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

Sounds like a better time than most of my recent dates.

Wow. Language!

Probably shouldnt touch the fire in #Fiendtower! Hard at work, lots of new things in store! #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart pic.twitter.com/Lbxk8XBZWG

Fire bad. Also, second-most hostile tower I’ve seen. Today.

#ResistJam game needed an old, crappy TV. Gots to have that solid oak cabinet. #screenshotsaturday #voxel #indiedev pic.twitter.com/toZArGa88a

Ha! At least no one’s going to run away with that thing. Unless they’ve been working out.

“Nerves of steel” or “just doesn’t give a damn”, eh? Eh? EH?!

I've been working on a cinematic platformer called 'Elfiria' on my free time, here's a mockup. ^^ #screenshotsaturday #pixelart pic.twitter.com/jbBrWgLreS

Pixel art is… art. For sure.

Ok. I think it's passable for now. That was a productive day, working both on assets and improving tools. #screenshotsaturday pic.twitter.com/9f2agFpDgJ

Funny how most stroll-through-forest previews end on a cliffhanger of sorts.

A peek at some sister time from ch.4 of </reality>! The book 2 beta will be out soon, we promise! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #visualnovel pic.twitter.com/jlMnOtzsi2

Same goes for visual novel shots. WHAT COMES NEXT?!

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
