Speculating Screenshots (19th September 2015)

Speculating Screenshots (19th September 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

To kick off this week’s Speculating Screenshots, we have an incredibly stylish paper-y creation. Groovy.

Hang on. Viruses are never cute. Never. NEVER! I call shenanigans.

Could it look more complex (and / or fun)?

Ah, the glory of old-school, and… I sense Castlevania inspired design.

Well, some people just want to watch the world burn, ya know?

More paper-y awesomeness, because why not? Really like the ‘cut-out’ design.

Never too late #screenshotsaturday Templar Battleforce is coming to #Steam on Tuesday! pic.twitter.com/SJdd3am3OU

Last but not least, a Templar getting absolutely roasted by some nasty looking creature. Ouch.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
