Speculating Screenshots (17th January 2015)

January 20th, 2015 Wraithkal Feature

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills. So without further ado…

They summon a terror thing from THE RIFT. #starrmazer #screenshotsaturday #pixelart #gamedev #indiedev pic.twitter.com/9OLvasl8pw

Star Mazer (‏@starrmazer)
“Terror” is definitely the word I’d use too, but man, check that interface! Straight out of old-school point ‘n click much? Star Mazer definitely gets my approval of awesomeness, even though… I’m not entirely certain as to what it’s about. Not yet anyway.

Today I did more work on NPCs #screenshotsaturday pic.twitter.com/HQLEFaRWXv

Wow. Brutal honesty right there. But what if… what if he isn’t pretending? What if he’s simply trying to trick the fella in front of him? Nah, chances are he’s just a lonely soul, looking for some company. Or?

All the blocks! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev pic.twitter.com/0QYd9H8zCJ

That looks incredibly… blocky. Sorry, had to do it. Seriously though, not sure what’s what in this one – the mysterious “I need to know what the deal is with those blocks!” design tricked me into featuring it this week.

WIP This is what I've been doing for the past 8 hours. x_x #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #indiegame #gamedev #gaming pic.twitter.com/6PqWZOJzAt

So this is what dodging a black fireball-spewing hydra-dragon-ish creature for 8 hours looks like? Terrifyingly groovy, I’d say. That said, what’s with the outfit color for the protagonist?

More sprites and tiles for #screenshotsaturday. I need more building tiles, those only really work for the floor. pic.twitter.com/D7Cb5HJExA

Wait a minute. So in its current state, the floor is the ceiling? The sky is the ground? Cats are dogs? FOX doesn’t suc– oh okay, let’s not go that far. Also, wouldn’t wanna live in that place just yet – not without a single door! Lovely shade of green though.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
