Speculating Screenshots (15th August 2015)

Speculating Screenshots (15th August 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

“What”? Someone to kill, that’s what! Less questions, more action – it’s a video game, after all!

oho! However will that poor protagonist survive the night, not to mention those enemies?

Six against one? I almost feel sorry for the bad guys… almost.

Wouldn’t be a proper Speculating Screenshots without a “wait, what?” pick…

…or one focused on explosions. KABOOM!

So, here is a HUD mockup for D-88, our #gbjam game. I like it! How about you, @ysperanza? #indie #screenshotsaturday pic.twitter.com/dnaJvRcHVf

Today’s the final day for GB Jam, so it’d be silly not to includ– WHAT? SAVE THAT GENERATOR!

Solid advice right there I’d say, based on the blood splatter. Such glorious wickedness!

Magbot! You should totally go play that demo. Right now. Or after perusing the remaining screenshot picks, of course. Your call.

I keep telling people to watch out for pixels. Maybe now they’ll actually listen? Love them pixellated monsters though!

Yay, Dungeon-crawling, and old-school at that! Although… “sprint”? Peculiar.

Today's forecast…blood and guts! #LetThemCome #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/sFH7o16kdj

Nothing quite like a massacre to start the day.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
