Speculating Screenshots (12th September 2015)

Speculating Screenshots (12th September 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

A single ship… into an armada? Smells like black magic to me!

#screenshotsaturday Not much, but here's my first attempt at a Unity game, Terminal. Yes, it looks like Gunpoint. pic.twitter.com/21Dz9Y9NXK

Ah, that pixel art. Why’s the character tripping over his own legs though?

Boulderdash. Grammar Town doesn’t exist anymore!

That looks dangerous. Very dangerous. Also, how the heck did he get up there?!

Wow. Stylish looking ship, and it seems loaded with goods to boot. When do we depart for adventure, captain?

Testing enemies, explosions, bullets, etc. I survived! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev pic.twitter.com/bfBhOZOYxy

Yeah, you survived… until the next encounter (and / or testing phase)!

No need to panic – just make sure they don’t go down! Damn I’m good.

Almost makes me sad they’re only likely to ever be used as background assets. Almost.

Last but not least, a tactical encounter of ancient fantasy!

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
