Speculating Screenshots, XL Edition (8th August 2015)

August 11th, 2015 Wraithkal Feature
Speculating Screenshots, XL Edition (8th August 2015)

For most, weekends means two days off work with some much-needed R&R. But for game developers, it’s also a time during which they get to show off what they’ve been working on. I am of course referring to Screenshot Saturday, which involves tweeting screenshots with the #ScreenshotSaturday hashtag. Screenshots which I will be critiquing some of every single Tuesday, in Speculating Screenshots.

Different screenshots from different developers, all working on different games. Some are very much a WIP, while other are from titles rapidly approaching release. These tweets do all have one thing they in common though, which is that they feature actual screenshots (or at the very least, mockups), animated or stills.

An old bridge is making everyone look this happy? Love the art style, but… an old bridge?

Looks like someone forgot to purchase proper quality reactor shielding…

Winners don't use drugs. Not sure where they stand on mushrooms though… #ScreenshotSaturday #gamedev #Luna pic.twitter.com/A8n06H4S3J

— Double Stallion Games (@dblstallion) August 8, 2015

But mushrooms are delicious! And in some games, they give you an insane growth spurt too! YEAH!

Anyone else see a lot of tiny, adorable space marines, or am I losing my mind (again)?

#indiegames #gamedev #screenshotsaturday Robin Hood is 100% stealth game: don't bump into grandpa or it's game over! pic.twitter.com/JoQtqRQ7QJ

— Roberto Dillon (@rdillon73) August 8, 2015

That’s a unique take on the Robin Hood tale, if I ever saw one!

Yeah, technically it's sunday. And technically this is a mockup. What are you, a cop? #screenshotsaturday #GBJam pic.twitter.com/lyqLdUeA42

— Vinícius Menézio (@vmenezio) August 9, 2015

Mockup, schmockup – all I see is a cool looking GameBoy-ish screenshot, and that’s fine.

Bit late #screenshotsaturday , but we have the balls. Also, we felt 6 players didn't quite cut it. #indiedev #gamedev pic.twitter.com/lcxbSYtDgn

Nothing? Boulderdash. I spy with my little eye… pixel art and… a tablet! A mysterious tablet. Yup.

#screenshotsaturday of my #gbjam. There's a horror in the darkness! pic.twitter.com/RkrDCzaipC

— Polyducks (@Polyducks) August 8, 2015

Well, it’s often said that the most terrifying things are those shrouded by darkness, so there.

Goblin Sword second content update coming soon. #screenshotsaturday #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart pic.twitter.com/JoN0St21wH

Wraithkal

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
