With All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween) around the corner, more and more games are getting in the seasonal spirit with an update – small or large – themed around creepy crawlers and spooky spirits. Fortunately for fans of papercraft RPG fun, Popup Dungeon went with ‘large’ with a brand new campaign spanning sewers, graveyards, haunted houses, and the like.
But what’s a Halloween-themed Popup Dungeon expansion without a bunch of ghastly new characters, enemies, and weapons? Boring, that’s what, so be sure to tell Rob the Zombie and Ortho the Bone Doctor I said hi, aye? A slew of new foes to vanquish also managed to join the fray, including a Pumpkin-Mimic and a Treant. Oh boy.
So come on, come out, go treat-or-treatin’, and survive the night! You’re not afraid of a fight, aren’t you?
Now, as far as the actual campaign goes… a curse has made trick-or-treaters’ costumes a reality and it’s up to players to not only figure out what caused it and put an end to it, but also find a way home. To safety. On this most wicked of nights. Making matters worse (or… better?), the path home is not even remotely straightforward, an open world-style map with areas connected by nodes replacing the typical linear route from A to B. A welcome change, if I do say so myself, and here’s an ever so slightly less fun tidbit: want to heal in this expansion? Better stock up on candy by trick-or-treating! Brutal, but hey, spirit(s) of the season and all that.
Last but by no means least, there’s new music from Gabriel Lefkowitz and “fabled 80s Rock-Band”, Thor. Sweet tunes.
Popup Dungeon is available on Steam and Humble Store.
