Get Ready for All Hallows’ Eve by Making a Game in MAGS October’s “Room of Fear”

Get Ready for All Hallows’ Eve by Making a Game in MAGS October’s “Room of Fear”

Adventure Game Studio. Easily my favorite engine, second only to SCUMM. So, MAGS! Unlike most jams, which tend to last from 72 hours to a full week with no engine restriction, this one spans a month and requires participants to use… wait for it… Adventure Game Studio! Who’s in the mood for creating some adventure games?

Fear is a funny thing. Wait, no, that’s not right. Fear is a pain in the you-know-what, and it’s time to deal with it… by creating a game revolving around one or more of your own fears! Why? This month’s MAGS, that’s why. Oh, and “As an extra challenge, the game must take place in just ONE ROOM. Title screens, credits and cut scenes don’t count towards the “one”.” Shouldn’t be too hard, seeing how the overall topic/theme is after all ‘fear’. Fear of the unknown? Fear of being forgotten (locked up in that one room, perhaps)? Or something else entirely. Your game, your choice, your… fears!

But that’s MAGS October. Let’s look at the month prior now instead, which has… two entries! Groovy.

Fred and Barney meet the future (Slasher)
Enjoy the comedic ride as Fred Flintrock and Barney Pebbledash (parody of the Flintstones) endeavor to obtain a Dodo’s egg as Wilma, Fred’s wife, has planned omelette and Trex Burgers for Lunch… Of course things are never that simple…especially if you happen to be Stoneage Fred Flintrock…

The Execution of Anne Boleyn (Riaise)
When villains from the future alter the past, a time traveller must try to set history back on track with the help of an imprisoned queen.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be an absolute snorefest - one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest in indie games comes from: pick a random title from a pile of indie games and chances are you’ll hit something downright unique and different, often for well less than $60 too.
