Humble Bundle’s Latest Weekly Lets You Get Into the Groove, Surf, Blast Aliens

March 20th, 2014 Wraithkal News

Show of hands, who doesn’t like themed bundles? Yeah, that’s what I thought, and this one definitely ranks among the best of its kind. With a lineup that includes a DDR-ish RPG, a SHMUP in reverse (no, really) and two arcade-centric SHMUPs, you’d be quite silly to ignore this bundle.

As has become the norm for these [bundles], not all featured titles are available in that so very juicy DRM-free flavour. Shame, but that’s just the way it is; Steam keys for the lot though! So… six games across two pricing tiers ($1 and $6), with applicable soundtracks added to the shopping basket, and hey – you get to decide who (Humble, developers, charity (Child’s Play and Electronic Frontier Foundation)) gets how much by adjusting the sliders.

$1

Symphony

Symphony (Windows – Steam)
Dodge enemies and blow up your foes in Symphony, the unique music-driven game that uses your very own song collection as the game’s battlefield. A mysterious force is infesting your music files and attempting to corrupt your song library, but you’ve got an impressive array of weapons to defeat their attacks. With an arsenal chock-full of devastating weapons and an agile fighter-plane, you’ll fight off these viruses in no time!

Sequence

Sequence (Windows – Steam)
Sequence combines elements of both rhythm and role-playing games to create an entirely unique experience. Join Ky on his ascent of a mysterious tower, guided onward by a girl named Naia. Encounter deadly monsters and ridiculous characters, and discover the grand scheme behind Ky’s mysterious imprisonment… that is, if you can survive the journey.

BIT.TRIP RUNNER

BIT.TRIP RUNNER (Windows, Mac, Linux – Steam, DRM-free)
BIT.TRIP RUNNER radiates charm and challenge with retro-styled, music-platformer gameplay. Players take control of CommanderVideo as he runs through more than 30 levels. Each stage features a unique music track perfectly synced to CommanderVideo’s hops and slides, resulting in a fresh and intuitive platforming experience.

$6

Audiosurf

Audiosurf (Windows – Steam, DRM-free)
Audiosurf is a music-adapting puzzle racer where you use your own music to create your own experience. The shape, speed and mood of each ride is determined by the song you choose. Earn points for clustering together blocks of the same color on the highway and compete with others online for the high score on your favorite songs. Choose from 14 different characters to make each ride a unique experience.

Beat Hazard Ultra

Beat Hazard Ultra (Windows, Mac, Linux – Steam, DRM-free) review
Beat Hazard Ultra is an arcade shooter powered by music — just choose any song from the game or from your music collection to fuel your gameplay. Power up your spaceship and watch as the music boosts your firepower. Unleash hell on enemy ships when you max out with weapon pickups!

Retro/Grade

Retro/Grade (Windows – Steam, DRM-free)
Retro/Grade is a mind-bending rhythm game where the flow of time itself has been reversed. Help Rick Rocket restore the continuity of space-time by un-firing your shots to the beat of the music while avoiding enemy attacks!

Don’t forget that Humble Weekly Sale: Rhythm Games will only be available for less than seven days (hence, weekly), so don’t wait too long; unless you enjoy paying full price for indie games, that is. Nothing wrong with that, but since a bundle has been made available and all – might as well, right?

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
