‘Frictional Monster Fan Jam 2023’ Has Begun

‘Frictional Monster Fan Jam 2023’ Has Begun

So, you know Frictional Games? Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA, Amnesia: Rebirth, and real soon, Amnesia: The Bunker? Ring any bells? I know, what a silly question. Anyway, the reason I’m bringing them up is that… Frictional Monster Fan Jam 2023 has begun!

I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely more than a little excited about the upcoming Amnesia: The Bunker. Doesn’t mean I’ll be participating in Frictional Monster Fan Jam 2023 though, but who knows, maybe I’ll write about some of the entries? We’ll see. For now, as you’re likely itching to get started, curious as to what’s what, perhaps even both, let’s start with the theme: Frictional Games Monsters. Simple enough.

We all know them, we all love them – the Grunt, Terry Akers, The Pigs, the Wraiths. The theme for this year’s Fan Jam is Frictional Games Monsters. You could even submit an interpretation of what you think the monster in Amnesia: The Bunker will be like!

Oh, did I mention how this particular jam is not a game jam? To quote the announcement post: “Video essay, 2D/3D art, music, mods, short stories, sky’s the limit!” I like it, even if it does limit potential entries for me to write about if no one, you know, actually makes a video game. But even so, it’d be pretty neat to have a short story or even music focusing on… well, you know the theme.

As far as deadlines go, you have until January 26th to submit your work, and winners will then be announced the subsequent Monday. Instead of reiterating every tiny detail from the post, I’m gonna wrap up this article with a ‘thank you’ to Frictional Games’ PR coordinator Oskar, who – with support from the Frictional Games Discord moderators – organized this jam. Good stuff.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
