Normally when someone falls in battle, that’s it. No more. But for Kveldulver, death is not the end. His revival – courtesy of the sisters of fate – does come with a task attached to it, however: this old berserker must find the strength… to prevent Ragnarök. Nothing, neither man nor beast (or worse, trolls) shall stop him, in the action-adventure that is Fimbul. So take up the mantle and fight. Fight like never before.
Now, with the tale before him featuring branching paths, some might immediately think ‘oh, replay value!’, but unlike most other, Fimbul handles these a bit differently. See, on top of being a mighty axe-wielding badass, Kveldulver is empowered by something called Lifestring, which enables him to go back to previous points in the story and… follow a different route. No need to start over when curiosity and “what if…?” takes over. Just rewind a bit.
Whether this will enable our fabled protagonist to grow ever more powerful in preparation for what is bound to be an epic final confrontation with some massive foe(s) remains to be seen. Fimbul‘s creator does make mention of the game’s combat being “simple to learn but hard to master”, and how players will have to “collect special skills, items, and a variety of weapons”, so I’m gonna go with ‘maybe’ on that one.
Fimbul is a single-player comic-book, action adventure set in the final winter before Ragnarök, The Fimbul Winter. You play as an old berserk, travelling to Jötunheim to fulfill his destiny, battling Trolls and Jotuns to reclaim an ancient artifact that might, just might save Midgard.
Even if I’m wrong, it’s still going to be super nice to revisit prior decisions and check out another possible outcome. One which might actually be more favourable in some way, possibly radically different too, maybe even containing a hidden area or two – areas full of goodies? Or, you know, lots of trouble. Trouble with which to test the protagonist’s fierceness. Heck, I’d be happy with any of the above, and on a related note… long live Kveldulver, mighty berserker!
Fimbul will be available on Steam and PlayStation 4 from November 29. Switch? Early 2019.
