Well, we made it to 2020 and the world has yet to end. Surely that means we could all do with a little more roguelike… right? Right. I’m just gonna go ahead and take your silence as a yes (since I wouldn’t be able to hear you screaming at the screen if I wanted to) and move on to the topic at hand: 7DRL 2020! A whole week of roguelike game jamming creating chaotic craziness is almost upon us and…
Oops. Sorry about that. Got distracted mid-sentence as I was revisiting the many awesome entries from 7DRL 2019 when looking for a screenshot (Frozen Axe) to put atop this article… in the background. Yup, totally what happened. Anyway, that was then, this is now, and a brand new iteration of everyone’s (other) favourite 7-day game jam is right around the corner! I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of seeing what people come up with this time. And, as always, how I am going to end up brutally murdered in every last entry. Such is the way of a roguelike, after all. It is not about if you die, but when. Also, in some cases, how, as it can be quite glorious. Or miserable.
Alright, enough dilly-dallying: unlike that of recent years, 7DRL 2020 actually doesn’t kick off in March, firing up its mighty engines on February 28th this time and cooling back down on March 9th. I know, not a literal week, but what can I say? Timezones are a pain. At least this way even those from the land down under will be able to squeeze in a full seven days. Hopefully. Whatever the case, be sure to register your game here, hopefully ending up joined by several thousand other glorious participants. Oh, entries from years prior? Feel free to poke about 7drl.com in case you need inspiration or, you know, something to play. I’m definitely more in the latter boat. Until it sinks. At which point I’ll start over with nothing but bitter tears in memory of what was lost. Ah, roguelike – a genre one can’t help but love and hate, in equal amounts.
