Grab a Hot Bev and Get Comfy by the Fire: ‘Winter VN Jam 2021’ is Knocking

Grab a Hot Bev and Get Comfy by the Fire: ‘Winter VN Jam 2021’ is Knocking

There’s not exactly a shortage of game jams this time of year, although that hardly makes Winter VN Jam one to ignore. Especially for those who fancy stories with cold weather, snow, hot chocolate, snowmen, ice castles… well, you know how it goes. Winter’s winter.

It’s also Winter VN Jam 2021’s theme, and as noted on the jam page, you’re free to “interpret that how you like”. Speaking of which: the ‘VN’ part of the name is actually slightly misleading, seeing how submissions aren’t required to be visual novels – as long as they are story-focused. Depictions of sex or gore are not allowed… and that’s pretty much the only rule, far as I can tell.

Whether it’s a story about a character settling down with a nice mug of hot cocoa and some gingerbread cookies, or an adaptation of The Snow Queen, your winter tales are welcome here.

Solo? Group? Why not both? What, the project remains unfinished by the time the deadline comes stomping through the snow-filled woods? Not a problem – submit it anyway! There’ll be no judging as part of Winter VN Jam 2021, so for feedback and – hopefully – a good time in general, be sure to stop by the DevTalk Discord server.

I think that about covers it? Oh. Right. Dates: from December 1st, 2021 to January, 1st 2022. There. All good.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
