I love interactive fiction – particularly the kind that’s entirely made up of text. Like, say, those that will hopefully come to be during The Bare-Bones Jam, which is well underway. Oh, and the interesting thing about this particular game jam is that, well, you have to create a bare-bones game.
In other words, no messing around with UI elements or adding funky things like graphics or audio. It’s all about the text here, and however the program/engine of choice formats it… is how it shall be. Something that’s all but guaranteed to result in some seriously old-school creations, and I’m all for it.
Have you ever wanted to create a game, but felt overwhelmed by the visual aspects? Or wished you didn’t need to edit the UI?
That’s pretty much all there is to The Bare-Bones Jam, which will be wrapping up on November 1st, 2023. Don’t forget to go through that page in its entirety so as to avoid unintentionally breaking one or more rules and having your submission invalidated. And if not that, well, how about the lovely list of recommended software for creating interactive fiction? Neat stuff. Now, go jam some bones!
