Few festivals can pride themselves on having been around for almost two decades, but that’s certainly the case with IGF, as 2017 will be its 19th year. Time sure flies, eh? Anyway, submissions! The deadline’s still a few months away and the event isn’t until next year, but even so.
Now, those with intent to participate in next year’s IGF have until October 24, 2016, to submit. Might seem like a long time, but remember what I said about how time flies because it will. Again and again. Then suddenly, a wild October 24 will appear, and you’ll be you-know-what until 2018. Which would suck.
As far as what’s at stake goes, well, more than $50,000 in prizes, divided among several categories, meaning even if you don’t pick up the big one, maybe your game will excel in another key area. You never know. Being able to label it as either ‘IGF Finalist’ or ‘IGF Grand Prize Winner’ would be nice though.
That said… with last year’s record-setting 750+ entries, the competition will be fierce, not gonna lie. Real game developers don’t scare easily though, and all you can do, really, is your best. A bit of luck probably helps too, so get to finding that four-leaf clover or rabbit’s foot. Whatever floats your boat. Then, come January 2017, we’ll know who made the cut. Very groovy.
The Independent Games Festival is the longest-running and highest profile independent video game festival, summit and showcase. It has served as a springboard for several games that have gone on to become critical and cultural hits.
Following that, come February 27, 2017, the winners will be announced on-stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, at which point… IGF 2017 will begin. No better time than the present to be an indie developer, I’d say (and I’ll probably say it again next time!).
