Lying awake at night, unable to fall asleep is a problem many struggle with, although hopefully not for the same reason as Vela as an unknown entity has been keeping her up at night. Her idea of a solution is about as strange as the problem: calling Mira, her ex, with a brief and to the point, “I Think I Need Your Help“.
Surely a journey into a forest at such a late hour is a bad idea, right? Only one way to find out, as they say, and so Vela and Mira’s little adventure begins, spooky atmosphere and all. A relatively short, yet both eventful and impactful, journey. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Created during Yuri Game Jam 2023, I Think I Need Your Help is a kinetic (as in, linear) visual novel, although the experience isn’t exactly that throughout. Given the opportunity, the story fancies taking a trip down memory lane rather than staying in the present, and more than once too. This can be slightly confusing at first as there’s no on-screen indication whenever it happens, but I didn’t mind and found it actually kinda helped with the pace. Oddly enough.
Now, if that bit about the spooky atmosphere earlier put you off somewhat, worry not, for it is by no means a horror game. Not by a mile. I’d say it’s more spoopy than spooky, Vela and Mira being so darn cute together – even when things seem grim, weird, or a bit of both.
As for exactly what they uncover in the forest, well, that is something best left for you to discover, twists, turns, and all. Is Mira’s mind playing tricks on her, and no matter the answer to that question, will Vela’s bravery be enough to help the two of them figure out just what is happening? Or will the woods— ah, right. Already noted how it wasn’t a horror game.
Anyway, moving right along… hmm… I think that’s about it. Sure, more beans could be spilt about I Think I Need Your Help, but honestly, that would venture too far into spoiler territory for my liking. So I’m gonna leave things here with a strong recommendation that you grab a copy and play it, as soon as possible. I’m sure Vela and Mira wouldn’t mind if someone else went along for the ride either. (Oh, and that someone is you, by the way.)
