“Think Worms meets Team Fortress 2”, they said. “It’ll be fun”, they also said. Well, I don’t know about the former, but Formicide does look like a good time. One of 2D team-based blow-everything-up… with ants. The promise of short matches didn’t hurt either, as certain other 2D war games have a tendency to take much too long in this day and age, honestly. Oh, and then there’s the fact that Formicide is not turn-based. No waiting for everyone to make a move – here you either shoot or get shot/blown up/fried/etc.
On top of all that, where are you going to find another game that lets you fight other people as, well, ants? Going to have to do quite a bit of digging for that, I’d wager, meaning you might as well give Formicide a chance instead, what with its multitude of varied classes and other fun things. Also, it’s pretty darn fast-paced, so hope your reflexes are up to the task. If not, I suppose practice makes perfect, even if that does mean getting your you-know-what kicked while learning. Ant life’s rough.
That said, you do have the option of hosting your own – private or public – server though, making battles with friends an option for learning purposes (or, you know, blowing them to smithereens!). Also, powerups are totally a thing, and from what I’ve seen, these can change the tide of battle like the shells in Mario Kart. Fun times. I think. Unless I’m on the receiving end of such bombardment.
Formicide is available from Steam, for free (completely free, rather than free-to-play).
