‘Community Scramble’ Review: Fetch for Fun

We all have something that we cherish above all else, perhaps even someone. Don’t bother denying it. After all, unlike the characters in Community Scramble, you are only human. So how about helping them all find the things they love?

Some games almost run well into triple-digit hours before the credits roll. This is not one of those. Much like its visuals, Community Scramble is a bite-sized experience. Did that make any sense? I hope so. If not, let’s quickly move onto what you’ll be doing over the coffee break spent gathering objects of importance and giving them to quite the colorful cast of characters.

So… oh, right. Well, now you know what’s what in this made-with-Bitsy puzzle game. No, you’re not out to save the world or anything that grand. Even so, do not underestimate the importance of bringing together a community, and it all begins with jam. A game jam. Because it was made during… right. Anyway, items!

It never ceases to amaze me what a little creativity can do to breathe life into a lot from very little. Like any other proper good Bitsy creation, Community Scramble does rely a tiny bit on the player’s imagination to fill in the blanks in its many different locations, but the fun and quirky characters do a good job of fleshing out the experience – which is, in simple terms, a giant fetch quest. Except this one’s actually rather enjoyable, with a variety of animals sending the player through a maze or to the beach for shinies, among others. Shiny… preeecio— ahem.

With all that in mind, I suppose one question still remains (kinda) unanswered: “Is it any fun?” Well, yeah. It might not be overly complicated, and as previously stated, doesn’t overstay its welcome by any stretch. But it’s definitely still fun, and a wholesome, easy recommendation.

Community Scramble is available on itch.io, for free (pay-what-you-want).

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
