When ancient ruins are uncovered, more often than not, it leads to fascinating and exciting discoveries. But in the case of Coin Crypt, the findings include a bunch of coins with mysterious powers. This very currency is also used to fend off hostile beings through deadly duels. Oh and the island upon which said ruins lie, is haunted by the dead. Spine-chilling!
Combining deckbuilding with coin collecting in a roguelike environment may sound a tad bonkers, yet that’s pretty much what the creator of Coin Crypt has done. Your adventure, as one of no less than twenty different classes, is all about accumulating currency so you can fight and, well, earn more currency – rinse and repeat. They can also be used to buy items from shops, as well as let you access new areas. Gotta collect ’em all…
You play as a lootmancer, who can unlock the hidden power inside of coins and use them in magical duels. The loots you take from chests and enemies also become your next moves, so plan carefully!
Kicking ass and taking names is a mix of skill and luck, as you’ll either have to play the hand dealt, or spend precious time redrawing. See, combat is a real-time affair in which the coins at your disposal decide your tactical options. Whether you choose to heal yourself or fling some at your opponent, either to directly damage him/her or drain his coin purse, you’ll have to keep an eye on your own too, because should one hit zero, it’s game over. No extra lives, no second chances.
But alas, such is the way of roguelikes, and that’s exactly what makes them so appealing. You need to tread carefully every step of the way, for one mistake will cost you everything. Everyth– oh wait, there is actually some sort of progression, in that you can spend coins to unlock additional classes upon dying, each of which features a rather unique play style; especially that monkey.
Tell me, can YOU resist the calling of the coin?
Coin Crypt is available for Windows and Mac from Steam and the Humble Store, where it carries a $9.99 price tag.
