Artificial and Intelligent: ‘AI and Games Jam 2023’ is Coming Right Up

August 8th, 2023 Wraithkal News

Artificial intelligence (AI). It’s a thing. It’s most certainly a thing in 2023. While I’m not entirely sure what to make of it, generally speaking, there’s a ton of potential for awesomeness. Oh, and what better way to explore that potential than with a third AI and Games Jam?

As the name implies, AI and Games Jam 2022 is a game jam that implements some kind/level of AI, “be it for decision-making, pathfinding, character behaviour, player modelling, level generation, or animation. You name it”. Do keep in mind, however, that entries are not judged based on AI complexity, as originality, presentation, and fun are instead favoured for this jam. Probably the best way to go about it, honestly.

So, solo or team? Engine restrictions? Discord? Both are valid, anything goes (although make sure you have at least one build for modern Windows or browsers), and Discord is… right… over here. Theme? Announced at the start of the jam, as is the norm, and… oh, right. One rather important aspect regarding your entry: “must not contain nudity, inappropriate and hateful imagery or foul language”.

There are a handful of other rules and tidbits of great importance, so be sure to check the website ahead of time. Sure, AI and Games Jam 2023 doesn’t start for another… wow, well over a month, but you know, better safe than sorry. Especially when AI is involved. Just saying.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
