‘AdventureJam 2021’ is Almost Upon Us! No Themes, Lots of Voting

We’re rapidly approaching the mid-point of 2021, and I’m sure some of you are starting to wonder if there’ll be another AdventureJam this year. AdventureJam 2020 did after all take place in April, and we are now well into the month of May… but worry not, for AdventureJam 2021 is in fact right around the corner. So close I can almost smell the (game) engines working overtime to finish before the deadline. Or some such.

As always, the important stuff first, and not just because of how close to starting this year’s AdventureJam is. So, it’ll take place between May 7th and May 21st, giving its participants the usual two weeks to get into an adventure-creating groove, hopefully creating an awesome new adventure for everyone to adventure. Adventure. Did I say adventure? Right. Anyway, rules. Rules which, well, haven’t really changed much, if at all, in recent iterations. Even so, read them.

Themes? No such thing this time. I suppose in a way, the post-jam voting – which spans multiple categories – has replaced the need for a theme. Kinda. Either way, it will be interesting to see how participants approach the game-making, fully aware that their creation will be judged in categories like ‘Mental Engagement’ and ‘Lasting Impression’, instead of just… you know, generic ‘is my game better or worse than this other game?’ voting. Voting will continue for one (1) month after the jam.

Last but by no means not least, do stop by the AdventureJam Discord, eh? You won’t regret it.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
