The Greenlight Groove: ‘INK’, ‘Exception’ and More

May 17th, 2015 Wraithkal Feature

Many Steam users don’t check or even notice most Greenlight additions; there are simply too many, making it rather time-consuming. Hoping to alleviate this problem somewhat, I bring you The Greenlight Groove, featuring my recommendations from the past week!

Starfall Tactics (GL)

Starfall Tactics (@starfalltactics) [Kickstarter]
In a decaying, war-torn galaxy dominated by three rival factions, you can…Adapt to new challenges by customizing and decking out your ships. Evolve your tactics by unlocking new parts and finding rare ship modules. Dominate the battlefield and create a name for yourself among the stars.

Fox & Flock (GL)

Fox & Flock (@smarter_games)
There is a Fox in the ballroom! Or so the whispers from the other ballroom dancers suggest. Can the Flock trap the Fox before it is too late? Or will the Fox systematically eat all the other dancers before they even realize he is in their midst? Based on the puzzle game Fox & Geese, Fox & Flock is a dark, modernized version of Queen Victoria’s favorite classic!

Exception (GL)

Exception (@TraxmasterSoft)
Exception brings a new approach to the standard platformer game by transforming levels as the player progresses. Entire levels twist, flip and rotate to create new challenges for the player. Battle against a range of ground and air based enemies while avoiding fast moving obstacles.

Okhlos (GL)

Okhlos (@okhlos)
Okhlos is a roguelike action game in which you control an angry mob of ancient Greeks who have set out to overthrow the Olympian Gods and destroy everything and everyone that stands in their way! It blends 16-bit styled pixel art characters with fully interactive 3D environments and features procedurally generated cities to rampage through. There are hundreds of unique characters that can join your mob!

Formula Fusion (GL)

Formula Fusion (@R8Games) [Kickstarter]
Formula Fusion Racing takes the best elements of Wipeout and F Zero X and gives the genre some real bite, taking AG Racing to the next level! The amount of speed you can gain is potentially open-ended; to the point of having an almost warp speed like quality. The game brings together experts in the fields of optimisation and performance, concept art from established film and VFX talent and a thumping soundtrack from international music artists to create a blended visceral sensation like no other!

Scenario Chess (GL)

Scenario Chess
Scenario Chess finally brings real-world terrain and scenarios to the classic game!

Super Space Meltdown (GL)

Super Space Meltdown
Humanities largest space station is under attack by mysterious alien invaders. You play as Sgt. Alex Cutter sent into deep space on a lone mission to save the day and annihilate the alien threat. But there’s a catch. The presence of these alien invaders seems to have caused the stations reactor to go into meltdown. This means you have 60 seconds to clear each room before the reactor melts down and causes time to loop back on itself, taking you back to the beginning of the game.

Umbra (PC and Linux) (GL)

Umbra (PC and Linux) (@umbragame) [Kickstarter]
You are a former officer of army of the Human Republic, forced to flee the death penalty because of the magic powers you have unwillingly developed. Being tracked down by humans and hunted by the monsters of the Wild, you are recruited by a mysterious group of Templars. And thus an epic adventure begins in which you will wander the world to fight inhuman, mutated monsters and discover the terrible secret of the extinguishing mankind.

Blockwick 2 (GL)

Blockwick 2 (@kiefferbros)
This is a world of colorful, weirdly-shaped blocks. The goal is to connect all same-colored blocks on the board. Blue with blue, red with red, and so on. Oh, and don’t mind the white crates. You don’t have to connect all of those. They just get in the way.

Battles of the Ancient World (GL)

Battles of the Ancient World (@hexwargames)
Each unit in the game represents an actual unit that participated in the battle, each with an actual strength between 250 and 1,200 men. The map represents the actual terrain over which each battle was fought. The game in has been designed to ensure maximum playability and historical accuracy, in that order. There are 60 different units across all the missions, ranging from elite Roman Legionaries, to Persian Scythed Chariots. Each unit has its own unique ability that you need to take advantage of in order to win each battle.

Estoc (GL)

Estoc
Estoc is a local two-player sword fight game mainly focusing on skill and reaction.

INK (GL)

INK (@ZackBellGames)
INK is a small project that I created post-Ludem Dare 32, after being unable to compete in the game jam. People responded positively to my prototype, so I continued to work on the project for roughly three weeks!

Victoria (GL)

Victoria
Your goal as the player to reach the end of the level without being caught by an evil, giant Jack the Ripper giving chase inside a giant cloud. Typically a runner game would constantly have a player moving right and jumping across platforms, however Victoria gives players the freedom to run left and right across the side-scroller, and to jump and climb, glide, slide etc! This is useful for handling mechanics such as cranes that need adjusting, and gas leaks that need fixing.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
