Time travel. Ain’t nothing quite like it, and in some cases, that’s probably a good thing. But in The Great Perhaps, an unusual artefact – namely, an old lantern – just might help save Earth. See, natural cataclysms have all but destroyed our lovely planet, as depicted by the screenshot above. Shame. So how about we somehow use said lantern to… rewrite history?
While 2D platformers are all over the place these days, at least this one tries something different, what with giving the player the ability to leap between post-apocalyptic Earth and “its vivid days gone by”. In the blink of an eye too – or rather, the flick of a lantern. Or something along those lines. I’m not entirely certain as to how the mechanic works but based on the trailer below, perhaps it’s an on/off thing? Perhaps. We’ll see once the game is out. Whether our astronaut protagonist will actually be able to save the present by traversing the past… also remains to be seen.
The hero will face the danger in the post-apocalyptic present, as well as in the past. Help him on his journey to find out the true cause of the disaster and save the planet!
That said, on top of having intriguing gameplay, The Great Perhaps definitely also brings it in the visual department, its puzzles and mini-games soaked in lovely Soviet aesthetics, complete with a cartoony art style and a soundtrack that changes depending on which timeline you’re in. Speaking of, what is the origin of that darn lantern and is it safe to use it as much as the protagonist will be? Why did he choose to return to Earth now, of all times? So many questions, all of which will hopefully have an answer by the time the credits roll on this one.
The Great Perhaps will be on Steam from August 14, 2019.
