When an Email Wreaks Havoc, ‘The Bugger!’ Shall Save the Day

September 14th, 2023 Wraithkal News

It was supposed to be a fun, laid-back gig; even if the company you work for manufactures, well, boring products. But sometimes, all it takes to ruin a good thing is one infected email – like the one your boss just sent you. With the entire island now in chaos, only one person can save the day: The Bugger!

As for how one email can wreak havoc across an entire island, yeah, let’s just ignore the weirdness of that and move right along instead. On to something far more interesting, like, say, the visuals. According to its creator, The Bugger! is presented in “a 1-bit isometric pixel art style”, which is certainly unique for a game released in late 2023. Looks pretty sweet too, although I am saying that as someone who grew up playing video games as far back as the mid-to-late 1980s, so… hi there, Nostalgia Factor. Nice of you to stop by.

Can you fix the bugs and keep your job?

Except, what nostalgia? It’s a brand new game, even if the mention of things like diskettes and dial-up internet pretty much places it around the 1990s; provided it’s supposed to be set in some weird version of our world, that is. Is that important? Well, not compared to the task(s) at hand: traverse the island, chat with its inhabitants, help them, play mini-games, and above all else, beat up those pesky bugs… or you can kiss your job at BoringSoft goodbye. Actually, that might not be a bad thing, aside from the fact that you won’t get far without money. So, bug squashing it is!

The Bugger! is available on Steam, itch.io, and the Humble Store, for $7.99.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
