Hard to believe that this year, the popular roguelike Tales of Maj’Eyal will be celebrating its sixth birthday… and yet more expansions (not to mention content patches) are still in the making. An impressive effort, and this latest – Forbidden Cults – certainly looks like something that’ll add unique and clever twists to a title already packing a ton of depth.
Now, unlike Ember of Rage, this one won’t be a new campaign, instead working more like a plug-in to the base game. Which I’m sure most will be fine with, because hey, new stuff and lots of it by the look of things! For starters, how about succumbing to darkness, becoming a Writhing One, complete with the power to summon… horrors? And you’ll be able to do just that in one of several new zones, including some that are genuinely weird and disturbing. A giant worm, for example. Yeah. I don’t even know anymore.
On top of that, you also get to become a Cultist of Entropy with this expansion installed and experience the carnage and mayhem as one of two new races, each featuring rather unique feats. And no Tales of Maj’Eyal addition is complete without new monsters, so of course, this latest also brings plenty of those. Some really weird ones. Like everything else in Forbidden Cults; quite the trend, really.
Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be available to the public, although at least its creator has revealed that “it will not take years”. So it just might happen this very year? Yeah. Maybe. For now, do give the trailer below a glance. If you dare.
