Getting evicted is never fun. Never. So what if you can’t pay the rent on time? Would being a couple of days late bring about the end of finances as we know them? Probably not, although in Sad Bird, well, that’s what happened. No “oh it’s fine, but only this once” or such. The bird got kicked out of the tree by a bunch of greedy mice. Yes, you read that right: bird, mice, tree.
But what can you do about it, if anything? Well, the door is open and everyone speaks the same language, so why not explore the tree, and see what you might find? Alternatively, you could play something else, but let’s assume you’re interested in playing Sad Bird and would like to know what it’s about. Which you do now. Exploring the tree that the bird got kicked out of by the mice. That’s it.
Seriously though, while this Bitsy creation only really requires a handful of minutes to see and do everything, it’s still an interesting experience. Its length and a slight feeling of being somewhat incomplete might seem a tad odd at first, but given how it was made in just one day by two people, I am still impressed at the result.
As its creator says on the itch.io page, “you can take from this game however much you like”, which is exactly how I’d recommend approaching Sad Bird. Not in search of a victory condition or such gamified concepts. Just start the game, see what you can find, and think about what you just experienced. That poor bird though.
