There will be no fighting in Röki. Danger might present itself, opportunities for combat even, but the journey Tove has embarked on to save her family in a world where nothing is quite as it seems… well, it has this thing against violence. A world in which obstacles are overcome by using your brain instead of punching and kicking like some wild animal. Logic and a little outside-the-box thinking shall craft the path forward.
Too cryptic? Alright. Well, what’s what is that… Röki has been billed as a “modern adventure game for all” by its creator and based on the art style and overall presentation shown in the trailer below, something tells me that’s a pretty apt description: puzzles, inventory manipulation, and a focus on exploration seem to be key components throughout this genuinely unsettling ancient wilderness. ‘Strange’ can likely be used to describe many, if not all of the locations within, and again – if the trailer is any indication, that applies to every last creature as well.
Seek out the ancient and magical creatures of the Scandinavian wilderness; some are friendly, some not so much! Röki has a rich cast of unique ‘creepy-but-cute’ characters – discover our own take on Nordic folklore.
Take all that and throw a lovely art style on top, and I’d say we’ve got ourselves quite a delicious little adventure here. Just be sure to keep an open mind, as I suspect not everything will make sense at first glance. But no matter how weird or mysterious, Tove simply can not afford to call it quits – her family’s at stake, after all! So get to exploring, push onward, chat with creatures straight out of fairy tales, and “delve into the rich Scandinavian folklore” brought to life in Röki.
Röki is available on Steam and GOG.com, carrying a $19.99 price tag. Switch release date TBD.
