There comes a time in every young girl’s life when the call for adventure simply can no longer be ignored. For Gail, Phoenotopia: Awakening‘s protagonist, that was the case when… well, all the adults suddenly found themselves abducted. But what starts as a simple rescue operation soon evolves into the grandest adventure our young would-be heroine has ever faced, and unless she’s careful, it could very well be her last.
As such, do not let its cutesy pixelated art style fool you, for dastardly dungeons must be conquered if Gail is to emerge victorious in a battle where the odds are bound to be stacked against her more often than not. Plenty of weapons and tools can be acquired, some of which are best utilized to vanquish foes while other, well, Phoenotopia: Awakening is very much a puzzle-platformer too. I just hope that there aren’t any of the timed variety. Hate those. Almost makes me want to not save whatever world a game takes place in if they’re part of the experience.
Solve the great mystery of the Phoenix!
Ahem. Right. Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, how about some rocket boots or things that go kaboom as you… fish? Ain’t no fun without some explosives to potentially uncover at least some of the many Energy Gems, Heart Pieces, and Moonstones that lie scattered across the world. Wait, is this a collect-a-thon or a puzzle platformer with elements of combat? Eh, don’t see why the answer can’t be ‘all of the above’. So there. Oh, and when you’re not busy kicking you-know-what in those aforementioned dastardly dungeons, there are vibrant towns to visit in which charming characters just might be more than a little chatty. Good stuff.
Phoenotopia: Awakening is available on Steam and Switch, carrying a $19.99 price tag.
