Visual Novel-Making Game Jam ‘NaNoRenO 2022’ is Almost Upon Us

Visual Novel-Making Game Jam ‘NaNoRenO 2022’ is Almost Upon Us

Alright. Valentine’s Day is over. That’s dealt with. What’s next? Ah yes, NaNoRenO 2022, and in less than a fortnight too, which means… it’s time to fire up your visual novel-making engines because March will be here real soon. Oh, and it has to be made from scratch. None of that ‘but I have these lovely pre-made assets lying around’ nonsense. From scratch!

That’s not the only restriction either: before March, you’re allowed to… let’s see… brainstorm, outline the plot, build a team (entirely optional), and create sketches “that do not lead to direct production of assets”. So no writing, coding, asset producing, or other funny business, ya hear? Not like the whole affair is of the competitive sort, but still – even playing field and all that jazz.

Genre, format, and platform? Up to each individual developer. Oh, and your submission, by the end of March, doesn’t have to be flawless – so long as it’s playable. Bugs can be fixed down the road. Or never. Most would probably prefer if they were. I certainly would. Just saying.

If you’ve had a visual novel idea lurking at the back of your head forever but never had the kick to go explore it—do it now!

More details, as well as the dates and a bunch of useful links, can be found on NaNoRenO 2022‘s itch.io page. But just in case: March 1st, 2022 at 7:00 AM – April 2nd, 2022 at 7:00 AM.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
