MAGS April Spawned a Groovy Shakespearean Pointy ‘n’ Clicky Adventure

May 3rd, 2014 Wraithkal Free Games, News

So, MAGS! Unlike most jams, which tend to last from 72 hours to a full week with no engine restriction, this one spans a month and requires participants to use… wait for it… Adventure Game Studio! Who’s in the mood for creating some adventure games?

Well, that was certainly quite the odd MAGS. The theme – as picked by the previous winner – was ‘Shakespeare’. Yup, the bard himself! Now, normally this particular competition spawns a handful of different titles, but for some reason, April only had one participant (or submission, anyway). Don’t know about you, but I find it puzzling, to say the least. I mean, were everyone else too busy, or did the theme simply make them lose interest? All very good questions that will likely never be answered.

On the flip side, the game – and winner, by default – was actually a brand new Oceanspirit Dennis game! Yay, more OSD! Oh and with the end of MAGS April comes MAGS May, and this time the theme is… wait for it… sex! No, really: MAGS May: “Sex” (OPEN) Probably NSFW. See? Can’t wait to see whether people actually end up doing something creative with it or not. Could go both ways!

If Shakespeare wrote adventure games, this is what they would look like. The latest Oceanspirit Dennis adventure features ghosts, swordfights, Ray in numerous fancy hats, innovative battle system, kings, ghosts, poison, and a tragic plot where lots of people die!!

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
