They say that good things come to those who wait, and in this case, that certainly holds true as the iOS port of Legend of Grimrock has been a long time coming. But now, the fabled day when iPad owners get to play the popular dungeon-crawler has finally arrived! Oh, and the game looks every bit as great as the PC version too, which is quite a feat.
Now, for those not familiar with the title in question, Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon-crawler of the old-school kind: tile-based, first-person, party of four, one dungeon with multiple levels and a wealth of monsters, objects, and magic. You – or your party, rather – have been exiled to Mount Grimrock for criminal actions, in the hope that you’ll never see the light of day again. But if you keep your wits about, pick up a few spells as you go along, laying waste to all kinds of nasties while navigating its mazelike tunnels, and maybe this mountain won’t be your final resting place after all. Maybe. It’s a long and dangerous journey, after all.
Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution.
While the UI has been overhauled for this port, placing everything at the bottom of the screen, including arrows by which to move around, the actual game remains largely unchanged. From the rune-based magic system to those darn puzzles and deadly enemies – all are present and accounted for. Who knows… maybe the touch controls, combined with the tweaked interface, make for an overall improved experience? Hard to tell from the trailer below, but if nothing else, at least the iPad version seems to be running smooth as butter, without screen clutter or other annoyances.
Legend of Grimrock is available for iOS 7.1+ (iPad, iTunes), carrying a $4.99 price tag.
