It’s time to continue your journey towards Mampang, in search of the fabled Crown of Kings. Unfortunately, the next leg goes through Kakhabad, a rather hostile wasteland – and not just because of what Mother Nature has in store for you. Traps, monsters, wizardry and other kinds of trouble await, so do keep that blade sharp and your wits about you, in Sorcery! 3.
Gotta say, what inkle has done with three-fourths of Steve Jackson’s Sorcery! so far is nothing short of amazing. Instead of simply digitizing the dusty text-and-dice driven gamebook originals, going above and beyond, creating a much more interactive, genuinely brilliant visual experience. Heck, in this latest instalment, they’ve even taken to creating an open-world adventure in favour of the linear/restrictive ‘this choice takes you to page x while the other one goes to page y’ path of most gamebooks. Neat, eh?
Using inkle’s unique inklewriter technology, the story is written in real-time, built around your choices and actions.
This change also brought along bits and pieces of original content for inkle’s adaptation, as this time around, you actually get to travel back in time! Well, kinda. Beacons will, when pointed at a specific portion of the map, change that area to a past version, allowing you to experience what once was. I suspect this feature is used primarily for puzzles, although it wouldn’t surprise me if additional story elements were also part of it. In fact, I’d be surprised it that was not the case.
Now, as was the case with Sorcery! 2, those who have already done the whole choose-your-own-adventure in part two, will be able to import their save – stats and all – to then continue his/her story in this third instalment. Something I’m sure fans will appreciate, as the series is after all rather story-driven; in spite of featuring a healthy dose of spell-slinging, monster-hacking combat. Oh, and I hear seven deadly serpents are lurking out there… somewhere.
Sorcery! 3 is available for iOS (iTunes) and Android (Google Play, Amazon), carrying a $4.99 price tag.
