Four Colors, Ten Days: ‘GBJam 9’ is Right Around the Corner

Four Colors, Ten Days: ‘GBJam 9’ is Right Around the Corner

Hardware may not always age well, and there are certainly those who would argue that such is undeniably the case with Nintendo’s brick-shaped four-color gem, the GameBoy. But who cares what they think? It’s still an awesome handheld gaming system, so what better way to celebrate it than with the ninth annual GBJam?

So, what’s GBJam all about? Well, to quote its itch.io page, “GBJam is about making gameboy games.” Couldn’t have said it better myself. Now, while you are allowed to scale the viewport, the original aspect ratio must be maintained. Aside from that, the rules aren’t exactly complex. Would still recommend reading them, if only to hopefully avoid ending up a rulebreaker with an invalid submission, as no one likes wasting time. Oh, and you’re encouraged to use GameBoy-style sound/music. In fact, please do, for that proper authentic groovy experience. Pretty please?

GBJam is about making gameboy games. Following the original specification, with a few fun additions, participants have two weekends to create a game.

What, dates? Ah yes, GBJam 9 will begin on September 17th, 2021 at 6:00 AM, ending on September, 27th 2021 at 6:00 AM.

If you’re feeling social, GBJam is on both Discord and Twitter. Now get to making lovely GameBoy-ish games. Go on. You know you want to.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
