Pick a book from the Deathtrap Dungeon trilogy, choose a character, and you’re ready to embark on adventures that await in Fighting Fantasy Legends Portal. Much like in the originals, although make no mistake: a lot of things are very different in this iteration of the Fighting Fantasy gamebook classics.
That’s not to say it strays far from the source material, however, as while the interface does resemble that of a board game more than a book… the tales from said books remain intact. As far as I can tell, at least, having not played the game myself. But then there’s all the new stuff. Combat is not determined by a mere roll of 2D6 here, instead opting for a more intricate system involving several additional die. The same goes for skill checks, and the more you manage to accumulate – and hold onto – of either, the better your odds of survival. Oh, and you can level them up too. Quite the different beast, this version.
Play as a novice adventurer and rise up through the ranks to saviour of the world in this epic tale of deadly traps, fearsome monsters and devious adversaries.
Plenty more fun stuff unique to Fighting Fantasy Legends Portal (ie. not in the source material), including unlockable player titles, roguelike elements, a Creature Codex, multiple difficulty levels and more. Speaking of more: Deathtrap Dungeon, Trial of Champions and Armies of Death – those three are just the beginning, as more is in the making. Whether it’ll be free or premium DLC remains to be seen, but for now… how about braving the depths, weapon in hand? May your stamina never fail!
Fighting Fantasy Legends Portal is available on Steam ($9.99), iTunes ($4.99) and Google Play ($4.99).
