Old-school Game Making: ‘DOS Games June 2023 Jam’ is Well Underway

June 5th, 2023 Wraithkal News

Do you remember the good old days with DOS? A time when computers weren’t even, you know, online? When video games ran on hardware so much less potent than the beastly hardware on which so many rack up an insane power bill nowadays? Even if you don’t, DOS Games June 2023 Jam might still make for a good time, whether you’re interested in making DOS-inspired games or playing them after the jam has run its course.

Oh, right: it’s actually not just about DOS games, as “DOS-inspired utilities, zines about DOS games, and tabletop games inspired by games from that era are welcome too”, which is bound to get the nostalgia drive going full speed ahead for those old enough. Like me. I’m old.

There’s no voting in this game jam so feel free to experiment and try new things.

Ahem. Anyway, a bunch of recommendations for tools to help jam participants are linked on the page, alongside a handful of rules. Do not ignore these, as “The submission should be inspired by PC games from the DOS era” is kinda what this particular game jam is all about, so it’d be quite silly to ignore it, while pretending “Bigoted content of any kind is not allowed” isn’t a rule, well, that’ll just get your submission removed. Simple as that.

Last but by no means least: looking to socialize, perhaps you’re a fan of Discord, too? Then, by all means, be sure to stop by the DOS Shareware Zone community!

DOS Games June 2023 Jam will wrap up on July 17, 2023.

Whenever a big AAA title claims it'll "innovate with groundbreaking features", it usually turns out to be a snore-fest; one which simply mimics other games (poorly). This is where my interest indie game interest comes from: pick a random title from a pile of these, and chances are you’ll end up with something genuinely unique - often for well less than $60 too.
