Don’t Starve Together may still be in Early Access, but that doesn’t mean Klei will refrain from expanding upon the co-op (or versus, depending) enabled survival horror. In fact, that’s exactly what happened just recently, as most content/features present in Reign of Giants were added to the stand-alone expansion, complete with tweaks here and there. Hope you’re ready to rumble with… giants!
Now, first and foremost, like in real life, Don’t Starve Together now has seasons! Spring brings heavy rain, while summer features blistering heat, and the season formerly known as summer is now autumn. Confusing? Nah. Oh, and giants don’t hibernate. Ever. So be sure to watch out for those, year-round.
Or how about some new playable characters, like Wigfrid the battle-hardened actress and Webber, who… uh, lives inside a spider that once tried to consume him? Not sure what to make of that. Although speaking of food: rabbits and other soon-to-be-turned-into-a-feast creatures need to be fed, or they will rot over time. Another step in the direction of realism, I suppose.
Ain’t just about additions either, as fire spreads more slowly now and the color of a Thermal Stone “is now based on its temperature relative to the ambient temperature of the world”. I have a feeling more are going to enjoy the prior change over the latter though, as fire can be rather troublesome to control at best – especially in the world of Don’t Starve (Together or not).
Players who currently own Don’t Starve on Steam will get Don’t Starve Together for free when it exits Early-Access. During Early-Access, current owners of Don’t Starve get 2 copies of Don’t Starve Together through the Frontier Pack at 75% off.
Also, those saves with countless hours in them? Yeah, those won’t include the new content, even if all the changes will be present. Sucks, but it does also make sense, in a way. Not like you were actually going to survive for much longer anyway, ya know? I bet you some giant or other will be knocking on your proverbial door sooner rather than later, after all, thus ending the game and forcing a restart. A restart featuring everything Reign of Giants has to offer, helpful and dangerous alike!
Don’t Starve (Windows, OS X, SteamOS, Linux) and its expansions are available from Steam, carrying the following price tags: Don’t Starve $15, Don’t Starve Together $20, Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants $5, and last but not least, there’s the Don’t Starve MEGA PACK $23.
