Like most people, I too enjoy sleeping. It puts my mind at ease, re-energizes my body, and so on. But what if I couldn’t wake up? What if I suddenly found myself stuck in a maze-like existence, built from every dream I’ve ever had, good and bad alike? It’s this very problem that Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz‘s protagonist is struggling with, as the poor guy has a terrible case of… sleepwalking.
At first, everything seems relatively simple, the exit well within reach and all. That’s not how it actually is though, as it becomes immediately apparent just how much the game enjoys playing tricks on you, changing the rules as you go along (probably because, you know, dream-state). Because of this, each level comes with its own unique quirks and twists, from blasting elephants to running from the all-consuming darkness – always something going on, and it’s rarely, if ever, what one might expect. Oh and zombies, because why not?
One of the more interesting features comes in the form of ‘narration’, as delivered by the protagonist himself, during… well, whatever might be happening at the time. This fella also has a tendency to think out loud in the form of hints, or indications as to where/what he’d like you to go/do next. Yup. Did I mention how dreams are, generally speaking, really weird?
Figuring out how to progress in certain areas can range from fun to frustrating, depending on your level of patience, as there are times when repetition is required, while other simply requires you to wait. Kinda entertaining, and at least – in some strange way – it does all make sense. At least in the moment. Whether or not our poor nameless protagonist will be able to come full circle, eventually waking up… well, you’ll just have to play Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz and find out for yourself!
