It started with a string of brutal killings. An incredibly depressing event to say the least, and unfortunately, only the beginning of what quickly escalated into something far more sinister. Something involving fanatics and an AI superintelligence, otherworldly tricks likely also partaking in the madness that is Whispers of a Machine. Fortunately, Vera, a cybernetically augmented detective, is on the case.
So, what we have here seems to be a proper good point ‘n click adventure, one set in a post-AI world; gorgeous pixel art, great voice acting, futuristic tech and all. Speaking of which, it seems Vera – the protagonist – has a few tricks up her sleeve, courtesy of the aforementioned augmentations. In the launch trailer (below), we see her not only utilize some sort of cloaking device, but she also tears off a locker door like it’s no big deal. Needless to say, you do not want to get on her bad side.
It isn’t all about getting physical and sneaking around either, as her unique skill set seems to also prove useful during certain conversations. Oh, and seeing how puzzles have multiple solutions, chances are these – and conversation choices – tie into exactly how this mystifying tale is going to end. (If at all?)
Ah, so many suspects things to do, so little time as those pesky fanatics are inching ever closer to their ultimate goal, which will absolutely destroy mankind. One way or another. The creation of an AI superintelligence has been outlawed for nearly a century in Whispers of a Machine after all, and with good reason, I’d say. Skynet, anyone?
Whispers of a Machine is available on Steam ($14.99), GOG.com ($14.99), Google Play ($4.99) and iOS ($4.99).
