It’s been almost a year since the latest from Trese Brothers, Star Traders: Frontiers entered Early Access. A year that brought about nearly a hundred updates as development progressed, adding more and more stuff, fixing bugs and… well you know how it is. A long journey, to say the least, and one that is finally over – or maybe it has barely begun.
Putting that question aside for a moment (or perhaps longer), for those unfamiliar with Trese Brothers’ Star Traders series, it is essentially a tactical space RPG series, all – to the best of my knowledge – set in the same universe. This latest entry seems bigger and better than any prior too, with a procedurally generated galaxy to explore and 26 different jobs/classes to choose from, as you go about… pretty much… making your own adventure. No really. So much choice-and-consequence here, you’ll have to really go exploring to see everything. And then you’ll still miss some of it.
First, there was the Exodus – when survivors of a great war piled into their hive ships and left the Galactic Core behind in search of a new home in the stars. Scattered worlds were claimed on the fringe of the galaxy. Each pocket of survivors held on to an isolated set of worlds while trying to rebuild under the great law of Shalun. Three centuries later, technology has brought them back together again.
As for what’s happened since it entered Early Access – short version: a lot! Long version? Feel free to read the 88 update posts on Steam. I’m not going to. You wouldn’t be reading this article right now if I did that, and it would be much too wordy with that much information at my disposal. I will say this though: good on Trese Brothers for being one of those developers that don’t keep their titles in Early Access until the end of time! Now go check out Star Traders: Frontiers and that lovely trailer, eh?
