Show of hands, who loves the craziness of emojis? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Now, how about the art of spitting? Oh. Decidedly fewer. That’s a shame because Spitkiss is all about combining the two. Kinda. I mean, there’s a love story somewhere too, but the main thing is that… you travel by way of spitball. An intriguingly strange concept, to say the least.
Described by its creator as a game that “re-examines traditional notions of love, relationships, and gender identity on two layers”, Spitkiss does undeniably seem like an odd experience, blending precision platforming with comic book storytelling. Although at the same time, a very original take on not only romance and the way it’s depicted but also platforming. When was the last time you flung spitballs to express emotion and/or traverse obstacles in a video game, after all?
You will have to lovespit your way through organs by jumping, trickling, bouncing and bullet timing. Surgical precision and reflexes will be required to see the outcome of Ymer’s feelings !
While the objective is always the same, as far as I can tell – somehow making that nasty little ball of body fluid reach the other character in the level – actually getting the job done is by no means simple. As such, it is fortunate that spitballs slide down walls rather slowly, and that time is slowed further while aiming said projectile-based affection package. Otherwise, chances are only the most skilled/patient lot would be able to progress far in a puzzle platformer like this one.
Spitkiss is available from Steam ($2.99), Google Play ($1.99) and iTunes ($1.99).
