If asked, most people would likely label Shovel Knight as a difficult, yet gloriously inspired 8-bit platformer, with a stellar soundtrack and a ton of content. So far so good, and surely that’s enough to tag it as a completed project, right? Not if you’re Yacht Club Games, as they just revealed an upcoming expansion, set to unleash a Plague of Shadows upon the world!
In this meaty freebie, Plague Knight will be replacing Shovel Knight as the protagonist, embarking on a quest to retrieve specific items from his former allies – the Order of No Quarter. With promises of things like “an explosive quest with a new play style, new story, new bosses”, that it’ll be a content update and not premium DLC, well, it simply blows my mind. Kaboom. Like the bombs that make up part of Plague Knight’s volatile arsenal.
Using his maniacal scientific mind, Plague Knight is seeking to concoct Serum Supernus, the Ultimate Potion. However, to retrieve these ingredients, he must extract them from his former allies… the villainous knights of the Order of No Quarter!
Unfortunately, a release date for Plague of Shadows has yet to be announced, but seeing how it’ll be demoed at this year’s PAX East… surely it can’t be far off? Also, come April 21st, the main game will be available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Vita, complete with a Kratos (God of War) cameo. Groovy. Oh, Xbox One? Confirmed, but like the expansion, no date.
Shovel Knight is available on Steam, Humble, and the Wii U/3DS eShop, carrying a $14.99 price tag.
