It’s been a while since I last played Risk of Rain, but even so, I do still recall how the 2D platformer blends fast-paced gunplay with RPG elements with a very lovely art style, and how it’s just… fun. Even more so with a couple of friends, because the more the merrier for the amount of chaos and carnage on display here. Oh, and I suspect Risk of Rain 2 – which was announced yesterday – will be every bit as entertaining. Even if it is, you know, going 3D.
That said, while I am genuinely excited at the prospect of another potentially enjoyable roguelike from Hopoo Games, to quote the announcement post, “None of the systems, artstyles, assets, or game design choices will necessarily translate to the final game”. Aside from the 3D aspect, of course, based on how they mention that bit over and over again in that same post. Or perhaps not even that is set in stone? Nah. That’d be crazy. Risk of Rain 2 will most certainly be a 3D game!
I promise that we’re doing all these things because we think it’ll make the coolest game. And to all our fans – thanks for sticking with us. We hope you’re all as excited as we are.
Unfortunately, save for mentions of a ‘unified character system’ and ‘item proc chains’ and the awesome – however brief – animated gifs, details are scarce at the time of writing. It does seem good things might come to those who wait, however, with the promise of more bean-spilling in future dev blogs. Then perhaps, sooner rather than later, we’ll even get to sample the goods in a playable demo. Because as I’m sure you remember, the Risk of Rain demo was pretty darn groovy (I thought so at least!). Pre-release demos are quite the rarity nowadays, but… who knows?
