Ladders! Diamonds! Flowers! Fences! Monsters! Outer space! Forests! What could all those things possibly have in common? Well, they’re all tools at your disposal in PlataGO! Super Platform Game Maker (what a mouthful, that title), 2D level editor turned video game. Or is it the other way around? I don’t know and I don’t care because… it looks like a lot of fun, on top of being the closest we’ll get to Super Mario Maker outside Nintendo consoles.
That said, one thing this one has that – to the best of my knowledge – Super Mario Maker lacks is, as the developer puts it, the ability to “link levels together to make much larger games and adventures”. It can be quite restrictive to somehow figure out a way for everything to fit into a single level after all, no matter how large. I mean, imagine if classic franchises like Ninja Gaiden, Contra, Super Mario Bros., and Sonic the Hedgehog had you dash through but a single super-long level? Yeah. No thanks.
On top of that, players will also be able to get creative with the sprites, either creating new ones from scratch or… importing them from other games. Well, either way, there are plenty of tools readily available for getting your 2D platformer groove on, taunting potential testers with everything from teleporters to falling platforms and of course, jetpacks! And even more is going to be added, it seems, at some point between now and its planned ‘by the end of 2018’ launch (read: Early Access exit, which is also likely going to be when PlataGO! Super Platform Game Maker will hit consoles). Groovy stuff for sure!
(Thanks to Gematsu for the heads up.)
